The Arts in San Francisco

I had the pleasure of going to the opening of the newly expanded San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. This is a very impressive addition on many levels. Firstly, the Fisher Collection is to the latter half of the 20th century what the New York Museum of Modern Arts collection is to the first half of the 20th century in terms of the depth of the collections. Individual rooms for Gerhard Richter, Frank Stella, Chuck Close, and Alexander Calder and many others are beautifully displayed in spacious new high ceiling galleries. The architectural design of the addition works beautifully with gallery spaces on multiple levels and an area that has an open corridor and staircases that lends itself to traffic flow and resting, taking in the views, and socializing.

I strongly recommend a visit to the new SFMOMA. In conjunction with the SFMOMA opening the Gagosian Gallery perhaps the leading private are a gallery in the world, had an opening around the corner from SFMOMA the same week. Nice examples from the seminal artists were in display and for those of you who have significant means you will want to “shop” for art here. For those who don’t, it is open to the public and is worth taking in a view.
