In 2009 I motivated the ASSH to take advantage of this extraordinary program, now named the Clinician Scholar Career Development program with high-level researchers across the orthopedic spectrum. This is an invaluable program to sponsor young clinic scientists and hand surgeons with a research focus.
I was the program chair for the Clinician Scientist Development Program in 2009.
Now, over a decade later, the program continues to go strong.
Please see the article below for more information on this sponsorship program.

ORS Clinician Scholar Career Development Program
October 2 — 4, 2025 | Rosemont, IL
Applications for the 2025 ORS CSCDP are now open. Please apply by March 31, 2025.
The ASSH will sponsor up to two "hand" participants by covering the sponsorship fee of $2,400. Fee covers two hotel nights, airfare, program materials and some meals. Applicants will be notified in May 2025.
The Clinician Scholar Career Development Program (CSCDP) is a project of the Orthopaedic Research Society (ORS). CSCDP seeks applicants in years PGY2 to PGY5 of orthopaedic residency, fellows, and junior faculty through year three who have the potential and desire to become orthopaedic clinician scholars (scientists and investigators).
The 2025 program will take place October 2 – 4 in Rosemont, IL. Completed applications, along with curriculum vitae (CV) and a letter of support, may be submitted between now and March 31. For more information and to view the application, please visit https://www.ors.org/cscdp/.
The CSCDP covers a wide array of issues spanning the career timeline of a clinician scholar. General session topics include:
Beginning Your Career as a Clinician Scientist (Scholar)
Orthopaedic Research: Bench or Bedside?
Building Blocks for a Successful Clinician Scientist Career
Challenges and Successes: Personal Experiences from CSCDP Graduates
Work-Life Balance
Research Collaboration
Resources and Opportunities for Research Funding
Program participants seek to enhance the competencies needed for success as both a surgeon and a scientist: scientific knowledge, professionalism, responsible conduct of research, research skill development, management and leadership skills, and communication skills.
